Dear OECI members,
As you all know, the objectives of the OECI accreditation project are to define consensual
quality standards and criteria for European oncology and develop a tool for professionals
enabling performances of the institutions to be assessed both internally plus externally.
Our shared objectives are constant quality improvement, benchmarking and defence of the
centre model within each country and through further European labelisation.
Through this project, we plan to develop a database of cancer centres describing in detail
the infrastructures and human resources present in cancer centres in Europe in order to allow
identification of the structures where accelerated development of innovative treatments or high
quality clinical research is feasible. This process will increase the efficacy of cancer
research and development and strengthen joint public private research in Europe for more
competitive cancer research.
The final objective is also to foster policies that will provide clear and sound information
for patients wishing to choose where they may obtain appropriate treatment throughout Europe.
We prepared a short brochure that will provide you with the key information about the OECI project.
The OECI working group is also seeking collaboration with other Organisations at the National,
European and International level, in order to bring more coherence into all the actions taken
toward improvements of quality, and in order to involve all stakeholders in the cancer field.
In this context, the OECI Accreditation Working Group organised a meeting with the representatives
of other Organisations. The meeting took place in Nice, France on 24 March 2006 during the European
Breast Cancer Conference (EBCC). The meeting in Nice was a great success, both for the Working
Group and the participating organisations. We discussed the OECI project in detail and discussed
potential collaboration with other organisations. Undoubtly, there will be great opportunities
of interactions with those organisations and the OECI Accreditation Project will be at the heart
of numerous European initiatives.
We had our annual OECI roundtable in Izmir on 19 May where we presented the stages of the project,
our accreditation tool, and the planning of the next steps.
We plan an internal pilot of the accreditation tool from June to October and an important Workshop
on the project in January 2007. We will invite all OECI members and other Organisations to attend
this OECI workshop in January 2007, where we will present the results of the first pilot and the
organisation of the second pilot. Educational sessions about accreditation for all OECI members
and Educational sessions for auditors interested to take part in the process are also planned
during this Workshop.
If you are interested in this project or need more information, do not hesitate to contact us.
Best regards,
On behalf of the OECI Accreditation Working Group,
Dr Mahasti Saghatchian
