Scientific Conference: "Discovering new worlds in medicine towards nanoapplication in cancer prevention and treatment"
Genova, May 22th and 24th 2008
Nanoscience offers a chance to make a significant progress in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Interacting with normal and cancer cells at molecular and cellular scale in real time is being applied in two broad areas: the development of nanovectors for drug (or imaging agents) delivery to cancer cells and the design of nanosensor devices for early detection of cancer biological signatures.

The 2008 OECI Scientific Conference aims to explore coming forms of personalized medicine in which an early detection and better comprehension of the disease will define more appropriate and effective treatments of cancer.

The GA of OECI will take place in Copenhagen June 15. The activities of the individual working groups will be presented and discussed. Focus for the working groups is the support of the various activities within the CCC.
The aim being to both assure quality infrastructures for care, research and education and to create harmonization for the facilitation of collaboration between CCCs. Presentations will cover education, clinical guidelines, accreditation, biopathology and biobanking (TuBaFrost) as well as new technologies within radiation therapy and imaging. On June 16 there will be a scientific meeting on translational research. Since CCCs are responsible for innovations in cancer care, integration with research is mandatory. Hopefully, this day will provide us with important information which will help us to avoid present harmful fragmentation of European cancer research.

Last year, the OECI held its annual General Assembly and Scientific Conference in Cesme, a small city near Izmir, Turkey. The events took place on May 18 and 19, in parallel with the week-long scientific meeting on “New Targets in Cancer Therapy” that had been organized by the Institute of Oncology of the Dokuz Eylül University. The venue and the local organisation were simply outstanding, and we are all thankful to Dr. Nur Olgun and her colleagues for the splendid hospitality we enjoyed in Cesme.

The 2005 OECI General Assembly and Annual Conference in Athens
In the 2005 the OECI held its annual General Assembly and Scientific Conference in Piraeus.
The meeeting, hosted by the Metaxa Cancer Hospital of Piraeus was dedicated to the inequalities and lack of homogeneity prevailing in the cancer patients prevention and care.
This is an ambitious effort, where the participation of cancer hospitals is crucial, since they carry the main weight of realization of the cancer policies. The national governments have also to play an important role as they are called to support and push forward this initiative to solve the problem of the cancer patients treatment. The reports presented on this crucial subject by specialists from all over Europe were used by OECI to formulate and establish the guidelines for the policy that Europe has to adapt in order to face the inequalities observed between different countries, and even in one and same country.
